Welcome to Super Mario Bros. Dismantled!

Hey, welcome to Super Mario Bros. Dismantled, a blog dedicated to examining oddities, glitches, unused content and the many design decisions of Super Mario Bros. and its derivatives! We'll be taking a deep dive into the game's programming to understand its various quirks and derive explanations for even the most niche game mechanics. The goal of this blog is to serve as a wealth of knowledge for Super Mario Bros. and provide insight into easily misunderstood qualities of the game. Regardless of whether you're an experienced ROM hacker, an avid fan of the speedrunning scene or simply a casual observer, I hope that this blog proves informative and entertaining!

The original 1985 release of Super Mario Bros. and games built directly off its source code are the primary subjects of analysis for this blog, although other titles may be used as a reference point or for cross-comparison. Officially emulated versions of these games are also fair game, especially if they notably differ from the original releases. Do note that we won't be focusing on Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, as this game is a full-blown remake and far removed from the NES original internally. With that said, these are the games to expect coverage for:

  • Super Mario Bros. (NES/FDS)
  • Super Mario Bros. 2 [The Lost Levels] (FDS)
  • Super Mario All-Stars (SNES)
  • Vs. Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo Vs. System)
  • All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros. (FDS)
Of course, this blog is currently in a preliminary state and subject to change, so feel free to provide suggestions or comment about topics you'd be interested in learning about. Although this blog will serve as a personal archive for game knowledge, I want it to be all-inclusive and cover topics that will satisfy the curiosities of readers. Thank you for reading and check back for updates to the blog!
